Balkampet Yellamma temple stands among famous temples of Hyderabad and Telangana. Located in one of the developed suburbs of the city, Balkampet, the Temple attracts huge number of devotees on Sundays and Tuesdays in particular. It is also very famous for the Bonalu Jathara celebrations that take place here. Bonalu is the most popular festival in Hyderabad and in Telangana.

This temple is dedicated to the goddess Yellamma. Yellamma literally means “mother of the universe” and that’s exactly how the goddess is considered. Jaggadamba is also an alternate name for goddess. She is also considered goddess Renuka by some legends. The other school of thought associates it closely with Renuka but makes the distinction between the two.

The temple made news when Reliance Industries President Nita Ambani came to offer prayers here.

Balkampet Yellamma Temple Story

The Renuka Yellamma Story starts when Renuka who was daughter of a king was married to a sage named Jamadagni and his mother name was satyawati. The couple had five sons, Parushurama was one among them. One day, sage Jamadagni angered his wife for not performing daily household works. He told her to leave the house, then saddened Renuka left the house and went to meet sages and requested them for advice. They advised her to pray to Lord Shiva and feed some brahmins. Meanwhile Jamadagni’s anger did not stop, He took further step and called all his five sons and ask them to kill their mother.

Listening to their father’s order four of them have refused to kill their mother, but only parushuramudu obeyed his father’s order, then Jamadagni gave parushuramudu one more order that is to kill his brothers along his mother. Accepting his father’s order Parushuramudu beheaded all of his four brothers, mother and he beheaded one more women who came to protect Renuka. After assassination Parusuramudu went to his father Jamadagni, Then his father granted him a boon. Then parushuramudu asked to provide life to all the people he has killed. In this process Renuka’s body got face of other woman who came to protect her and that woman got renuka’s face. Then Jamadagni accepted the woman with renuka’s body, the other women turned into Yellamma thalli. She will be prayed by telangana people with due respect. Festive Season

Balkampet Yellamma Goddess is also considered as an incarnation of the goddess Kali. This explains the great Bonalu celebrations at the Balkampet Yellamma Temple. Devotees offer animal sacrifices in the form of goat and hen. But the most important festival that the famous temple is the wedding ceremony of the goddess of the temple – Yellamma Kalyanotsavam.

History

The Balkampet Yellamma Temple History dates back to 15th century and it is considred as one of the ancient temples of Hyderabad and telangana. The temple has undergone lot of renovation during the course of time. The prtesent form of temple is renovated in early 20th century.

The idol of the goddess, interestingly, is 10 feet deeper than the ground level. There is also a well in the Balkampet Yellamma temple complex and some devotees believe that the water in the well heals all ills. Therefore, a bath here is supposed to purify you of all disorders and skin diseases. This holy water is called ‘Theertham’. An Akhand Jyoth is also present in the temple that was lit during the renovation. Also included in the temple complex are shrines dedicated to various other gods such as Sri Pochamma, Rajarajeshwari, Nagadevta, Ganesha. It is planned to build a complex for pilgrims who visit the Bonalu celebrations in this temple of Hyderabad.
