8.History

8.1.Legend
Legend has it that Sri Rama installed Siva Lingam here to atone for the sin of killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin. He choose this beautiful valley surrounded by verdant greenery and hills for this purpose and ordered Hanuman to bring a Sivlingam from Varanasi. Hanuman didnot arrive with the lingam in time and, at the approach of the right time, Lord Siva himself appeared before Sri Rama and presented a Sivilingam for installation. Hence the lingam in the temple is called Swayambhu Lingam. It is also called Ramalingeswara while Lord Sri Rama had installed the lingam.

Hanuman returned with 101 lingams for the Varanasi selection and felt aggrieved that he had not installed his lingam. From where he threw them everywhere in the region. Even to this day, several lingams are scattered everywhere outside the temple.

To soften Hanuman, Sri Rama ordered that precedence be given to him for temple worship. He also said that the mound where the lingam was installed would bear his name kesarigiri that is, Hanuman, the son of Kesari. Over a period of time, he has become familiar and is now known as Keesara and Hill as Keesaragutta. Since then, the rituals follow the command of Sri Rama.

8.2.Archaeological excavations
Exploration and Excavations were carried out by the archaeological department in the vicinity of Keesaragutta temple. Many remains of brick structures and Shiva Lingas were found on the hill north of the temple and a hillock near the water resource. The remains belonged to the reign of the Chalukyan Empire. Fortification walls, Yaga Shala and prayer halls were searched here. Some remains of Vestige and cisterns were found on the hills as an indication of Buddhism and Jainism in bloom at the same time. On October 18, 2014, twelve idols of Jain Tirthankara belong to the fourth-fifth century were found near the steps of the temple at a depth of one foot, which proves that Jainism coexisted with Hinduism in Keesaragutta at the time of Vishnukundins. 4th-5th century. but for 60 to 70 years thatakam family is working hard to develop the temple, and they are the founding trustees of the temple now.
