About Paigah tombs
Paigah Tombs or Maqhbara Shams al-Umara, are the tombs belonging to the Paigah family, ferocious loyalists of the Nizams, who were members of the state, philanthropists and generals by their side. The tombs of Paigah are among the main wonders of the Hyderabad city, known for their excellent architecture, as evidenced by their mosaics and craftsmanship. The Paigah is located in a quiet area 4 km south-east of Charminar Hyderabad, in the Pisal banda suburb, in a small lane opposite the Owasi Hospital near Santosh Nagar.
These tombs are made of lime and mortar with magnificent inlaid marble sculptures. These tombs are 200 years old and represent the last resting places of several generations of Paigah Nobles. Distributed over an area of 30 to 40 acres, the origin of the Paigah tombs dates back to the late 18th century. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Hyderabad, the Paigah Tombs are known for their excellent architecture. One among the best examples of Indo Saracenic architecture, the tombs presents a beautiful mix of Asaf Jah and Rajputani architectural style. Built in white marble, Paigah’s tombs captivate visitors with intricate interiors. Paigah tombs History
The nobility Paigah was founded by Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung who had served the 2nd Nizam. The title of “Shams-ul-umra” which means that the sun among the masses was granted to him by the Nizam. Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung was then buried at the entrance of the complex in the year of 1786. Teng Jung’s tomb displays fascinating architecture with exquisite trellis work with a massive canopy.
It was renovated by his son Amir E Kabir. It was called Paigah Tombs, which became the last resting place for the rest of the family. The tombs of Paigah have graves of many members of the family. These members also had a primary nobility in the Nizams court. Some of the tombs are of Sultan-ul-Mulk, Asman Jah, Shams-ul-Umra, Sir Viqar-ul-Umara, Zaheer yar Jung, Sir Khursheed Jah and others.
